S. Korean yards win nine LNG carrier orders
Seoul, Aug 1 (LNG journal)
- Two of the world largest shipyards, South Korea's Samsung Heavy Industries and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, said Monday they had won orders between them for nine liquefied natural gas carriers.

Samsung, the world's third-biggest shipbuilder, said it secured a $1 billion order from Teekay Shipping Corp. for four LNG carriers to be delivered in 2008. The carriers will carry LNG from northern Qatar to North America .

Daewoo Shipbuilding, the world's second-largest shipbuilder, said it received an order for five LNG tankers valued at $1.2 billion from Qatar Liquefied Gas II, a joint venture between Exxon Mobil Corp. and state-run Qatar Petroleum.

Daewoo said its latest deal means it has secured nine out of 20 large LNG tanker orders from Qatar since last year, bringing to 52 its total tanker book by early 2007.
