RasGas builds up carrier fleet for 2008
Doha, Aug 12 (LNG journal)
- Qatar's Ras Laffan Natural Gas Co. has awarded 25-year contracts to a group of five Japanese companies to ship liquefied natural gas to North America beginning in August 2008, the companies said.

The companies are Mitsui OSK, Nippon Yusen KK, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Iino Kaiun Kaisha, and Mitsui & Co.

The companies are expected to spend around $1.8 billion to build eight ships to carry more than 5 million tonnes per annum of LNG.

The carrier orders are expected to go to South Korean shipyards such as Daewoo Shipbuilding and Hyundai Heavy Industry.

These yards are also expected to build some of the 12 carriers ordered by RasGas to carry its phase 3 production.
