Mitsubishi signals solid LNG boiler demand

Tokyo, Aug 17 (LNG journal)
- Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd., the Japanese company that builds LNG carriers and a host of other heavy industrial products and facilities, plans to boost output capacity for liquefied natural gas boilers used in carriers.

The company, whose boilers are supplied to shipyards in South Korea , China and Japan said it will increase production by 10 percent as demand remains solid. Mitsubishi will produce a total this year of 42, and its order backlog for fiscal 2006 is put at 34 units.

Mitsubishi, which itself had built Moss-type and Membrane-type carriers, plans to add a new water pressure testing facility at its Nagasaki facility in southern Japan .

Mitsubishi supplies most of the world's carrier boilers. Most LNG carriers use the steam turbine propulsion system with duel fuel boilers that take advantage of boil-off gas (BOG).

In carriers that transport LNG in the refrigerated condition, BOG is inevitably produced as a result of heat coming from outside the tanks. To control the tank pressure rise, BOG is utilized as boiler fuel to generate propulsive force for steam turbines.
