India seeks RasGas LNG surplus among others

India is targeting the estimated 1.25 million tonnes of surplus liquefied natural gas produced by Qatar's Ras Laffan Liquefied Natural Gas Co. and is also looking at other supply possibilities as it struggles to meet rising domestic demand.
The supply of 1.25mtpa of LNG to India from Qatar would be in addition to the 5mtpa contracted from the Gulf state, India's financial press reported. India is reportedly able to meet only half of its estimated daily gas requirements of around 180 million standard cubic metres.
RasGas has been supplying 5 million tonnes of LNG to India since January 2004 under a 25-year contract, with supplies being received at the port of Dahej in India 's western state of Gujarat , the country's first LNG terminal. Dahej terminal is in the process of being expanded to handle 10mtpa.
In addition, RasGas has been contracted to supply 2.5 million tonnes of LNG to the Kochi terminal of India 's Petronet LNG on the south-west coast of India once it is completed at the end of 2009.
