Tokyo, July 24 (LNG journal)
- Japanese tanker companies Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha and Nippon Yusen KK have won contracts to ship liquefied natural gas from the BP-operated Tangguh field in Indonesia to Mexico and South Korea.

The 20-year contracts are due to start in 2008. Kawasaki Kisen is expected to introduce three new LNG carriers, while Nippon Yusen plans to acquire two tankers jointly with an Indonesian line and a Russian state-owned shipping company. The cost of the five carriers is expected to be around $880 million.

The Tangguh project, whose partners include BP, Indonesian oil company Petramina and others is expected to produce 7.6 million tonnes of LNG a year.

These vessels, along with two which are to be operated by Teekay LNG Partners, are expected to transport about 5 million metric tonnes of LNG a year to Sempra Energy's planned terminal next to the Coronado Islands off the Mexican state of Baja California and to Pohang Iron & Steel Co. in South Korea .
